Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint

For Easter two years ago, the Easter Bunny brought the kids some sidewalk chalk paint.  It came with stamps and was a huge hit!  However, it was REALLY expensive at over $20 a kit and it only lasted about 30 minutes.

I started googling for DIY  sidewalk chalk paint and came across a ton of recipes.   I cannot remember where this one came from, but it is very simple and quick.  We tried the recipes with flour, but it does not work as well.

To make Sidewalk Chalk Paint you only need:

  • A container to hold the paint (I prefer a muffin tin as it is sturdy and not breakable outdoors!)
  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Food Coloring
  • Paint brushes

Kids can help with every step! It is great practice for them to learn to how to measure the cornstarch. Having them pour into each tin is great for developing fine motor skills.

They love to help mix the cornstarch and water together.  Depending on age they may make a little bit of a mess, but it is easy to clean up!

My boys LOVE to add the food coloring.  Experimenting with different combinations is part of the fun!  We also use this as an exercise to for primary and secondary colors.

Once the colors are all mixed we head outside and find some surface to paint.  While our preference is concrete sidewalks, the paint shows up on decks and our blacktop drive as well.

When the paint dries it looks just like chalk, but your hands do not get the chalk dust and you have limitless color options!
