We arrived home from a vacation in Mexico right as the COVID-19 quarantine was starting here in the US. In a panic, we rushed out to stockpile along with most of the country. One of the staples we stocked up on was sweet potatoes. A few weeks in we still had a TON of sweet potatoes and while the boys loved them mashed needed to try something new. We had always bought our own sweet potato fries in the freezer section at the grocery store, they were good but at close to $5 a bag we did not buy them often, especially as my boys can easily crush 2 bags!
I decided to figure out how to make sweet potato fries. While it may not be the healthiest option, deep frying definitely produces a superior fry. I am providing the healthier alternative of baking the fries as well.

Sweet Potato Fries
Ingredients
- 3 sweet potatoes
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
If Frying:
- 4 cups high heat oil such as canola peanut, or safflower oil (for frying)
If Baking:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
Instructions for frying:
- Cut the sweet potatoes into thin and EVEN slices (between 1/4 and 1/2 inch thick).
- Heat 4 cups of oil in a 6 quart stock pot or a dutch oven over medium low heat. Be careful not to have the heat to high as it will burn the sweet potato fries.
- Once the oil is heated drop the first batch of sweet potato fries. You will want the fries to all be covered in oil (you should have 2-3 batches to cook).
- While the fries are cooking in a small container mix the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper together.
- Cook until the sweet potato fries start to turn a golden brown, usually 7-10 minutes. Remove the fries and place on a plate covered in paper towels (helps absorb the excess oil)
- Sprinkle the seasoning generously on the fries. Repeat steps 3 to 6 until all of the sweet potato fries are cooked. Enjoy!
Instructions for baking:
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- Cut the sweet potatoes into thin and EVEN slices (between 1/4 and 1/2 inch thick).
- Toss the sweet potatoes with 3 tablespoons olive oil.
- Add the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper and toss with the fries.
- Spread the sweet potato fries on a baking sheet flat (try to avoid the fries piled on each other).
- Cook the sweet potato fries for about 15 minutes and flip the fries and cook for another 10 to 15 minutes. Enjoy!
