Beef Bobotie: Classic South African Comfort Food

I love food from all over the world and experimenting with new recipes.  So, I started hunt to look for new dishes and focused on South African food.  I was estatic when I came across Beef Bobotie.  It is a traditional dish served there and considered comfort food (similar to spagetti or pizza, yum!).

I fell in love with this dish and think you will too.  It is full of savory flavors, and smells heavenly when it is cooking.   Beef Bobotie is simple to make and I highly encourage you to be adventurous and try it!

Beef Bobotie is made with ground beef seasoned with curry, ginger and garlic and topped with a creamy topping comprised of eggs, cream and turmeric.  It is a rich dish that is full of flavor in every bite.

Ingredients for making Beef Bobotie:

  • Butter
  • Onion
  • Minced garlic
  • Ginger
  • Ground beef
  • White vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Beef bouillon cube
  • Curry powder
  • Chutney (I recommend mango)
  • bread
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Heaving whipping cream
  • Turmeric

Walk through on How to Make Beef Bobotie

First, you will need to brown your ground beef in a skillet and then add the onions, garlic and ginger.  Next, once everything is cooked you will add additional seasoning including, vinegar, Worcestershire, bouillon cube, curry and chutney.

Then you will use a medium mixing bowl, beat together the egg, cream and turmeric.  Once mixed, set the bowl aside until the dish is almost done cooking in the oven.

Then you will transfer the meat mixture with into casserole dish and break up the milk soaked bread.

Lastly, after cooking the casserole for about 30 minutes, remove the dish from the oven and top with the egg mixture.   Place the casserole dish back in the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes. 

Serve with a side of rice and top with additional chutney and ENJOY!

Ingredients
  

Casserole

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 large large onion diced
  • 6 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp beef bouillon cube
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 2 tbsp chutney I recommend mango
  • 3 slices bread
  • 3/4 cup milk

Egg Mixture

  • 1 tbsp egg
  • 1/2 cup heaving whipping cream
  • 1 tsp turmeric

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  • Meanwhile, heat the butter in a cast-iron skillet. Add the diced onions and minced garlic until starting to brown.
  • Add the ginger and cook for about 3 more minutes.
  • Add the ground beef, as the beef cooks break it apart with the edge of your spoon.
  • While the beef is cooking, soak the bread in the 3/4 cup of milk (you can use a shallow bowl).
  • Once the meat is browned along with the curry powder, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon cube, and chutney. Mix together.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, beat together the egg, cream, and turmeric.
  • Next, add the soaked bread to the skillet and break it up.
  • Transfer the skillet to a baking dish and put it in the oven.
  • After cooking for about 30 minutes, remove the dish from the oven and top with the egg mixture. Place the casserole dish back in the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Serve with a side of rice and top with additional chutney.
