Scrumptious Apple Crisp
Looking for a healthy-ish desert and not sure what to do with a bunch of extra apples? Make Apple Crisp!
With COVID-19 we are constantly looking for fun but safe things do with our very active toddlers! This summer while we were camping we took the boys to a farm to pick our own fruit, HELLO apples and peaches!
We took them to a beautiful orchard called Chiles Peach Orchard in Crozet, VA tucked in next to the Appalachian Mountains and about 20 minutes from Skyline Drive. They have over a dozen different types of apples throughout the season and we found everyone super friendly and helpful! Added bonus, they have restrooms which is a must have for the littles!
What to do with all those apples!!! Make Apple Crisp!
The boys had a blast running around the orchard picking fresh fruit. The basket did not look nearly as big when we were picking the apples, now that we are home to say we ended up with too many apples is an understatement. However, this gave me a great excuse to play around and perfect an apple crisp recipe…yum!
What type of apples is best for baking Apple Crisp?
According to SelectHealth.org there are 7,500 different varieties. YES, you are reading this correctly 7,500, of which there are 2,500 varieties in the United States alone!
When selecting the best apple to use, it depends on how you plan to use the apple. When making apple crisp I recommend an apple that works well for baking.
HoneyCrisp Apples
This is a great option as they are easy to get in the grocery store, have a great crisp texture and hold firm when baking.
Braeburn Apples
Another great option, and typically easy to find in the grocery store as well. Braeburn apples are juicy when cooked and have a strong enough flavor that they hold their own when mixed with strong spices such as cinnamon.
Pink Lady Apples
These are a little harder to find in my experience but are a great apple that is both sweet and tart.
